The device is made from strong white shatter-proof plastic, and the top part is attached above the window, the bottom part to the window-sill. The bottom part is in two pieces with a quality British lock, and can be undone to remove the bars if there's a fire, or the bars are not required. With net curtains or vertical blinds the bars are barely visible.

The prototype of the device was developed at Bournemouth University School of Engineering rapid prototyping facility.
